Stress Testing
Diagnostic Evaluation & Cardiovascular Imaging
Why is this test needed?
A stress test helps our doctors determine how well your heart handles physical activity. As your body works harder, it requires more oxygen, forcing the heart to pump more blood. This test can reveal blood flow issues that may not be apparent while you are at rest.
Common Reasons:
- Diagnosing Coronary Artery Disease
- Identifying Heart Rhythm Issues
- Evaluating shortness of breath or chest pain
- Checking heart health before surgery
What to Expect
Preparation: Electrodes are placed on your chest to monitor your EKG throughout the test.
Activity: You will walk on a treadmill that gradually increases in speed and incline.
Monitoring: We track your blood pressure and heart rhythm until your heart rate reaches a set target.
How to Prepare
Clothing: Wear comfortable walking shoes and loose-fitting exercise clothes.
Food: Do not eat or drink for 3 hours prior to the test (water is okay).
Medication: Ask your doctor if you should stop taking certain heart medications 24 hours before.
Caffeine: Avoid all caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate) for 24 hours.
*If you are unable to exercise, a "Chemical" or "Nuclear" Stress Test can be performed using medication to simulate the effects of exercise on the heart.
